To resolve or not to resolve?

Already the 3rd. I can't believe it.

How many people make resolutions--and keep them?

I don't make them as a rule because I believe we should make a concerted effort every day to do the right things. However, one of the right things for me this year is to get a handle on compartmentalizing my life. Work has drifted into family time, and seems to be sucking the family time away. I haven't been working that efficiently either.

So that's my resolution for this year. Make sure I'm working at work and playing at playing.

What about you?

Anna, I agree that every day is a new day to be lived to it's fullest. However, I think writing down goals makes it real because then there's something tangible before us. Posting them in a place where we see them every day almost forces a committment. Of course, I haven't done either yet. ;) But I will.

Ahhh, Jen, your goal is to set goals. I think it's wise to take your time about it. Mine are sort of intangible this year, but I don't think goals should be made or taken lightly. They have to challenge, and yet they should be possible. You have to decide why something is a goal. I'm depending on my goals to build a nice, strong foundation.

Thanks for stopping by. You know I think you're a wise woman!

Searching for blogs by writers, I've stumbled onto this site. It's great to read a blog by someone who actually publishes things in material form.

My goal is to spend a good deal of time and energy getting a short story published. Whether it's published is out of my control, but I have to try. It's all too easy to put it off, start something else, delay, delay.

That, and writing as much as I can. I've been rather undisciplined lately.

thanks for posing the question, and happy 2007!

Andrea,

Thanks for stopping by and for bringing good wishes!

You've chosen a hard path. The short story market is so limited these days, but you're right about needing discipline. I don't know how much time I wasted being seduced by new ideas before doing the work with whatever WIP I was wrestling.

Writing is such a wonderful profession--you get to make up whole worlds and fill them with people who fascinate you. But the harder you work, the harder the work becomes, and the new idea can often seem like the better one. I can only tell you I've learned a lot about my own work by simply finishing the stories instead of following that slippery siren to the next idea.

Best of luck to you! Come back and let me know how it goes!
